Pipe thread is different from the other threads. It is tapered along the entire length of the thread in order to assist in sealing connections. In the example to the left, 1/2” refers to the size of the pipe being tapped for, even though 1/2” black pipe has an interior diameter of .645”-.650”. The actual diameter that the pipe tap threads for is a tapered thread that is .850” at its largest.
